The morning of your 17th birthday, I sent this picture to your dad's phone. Stunning smile, shorts on backwards, beloved red cowboy boots on our darling little boy in the back patio of our Iquique house. Oh, how we loved and enjoyed you then and we love and enjoy you still!
Your 17th year of life will be one of major transitions, and it may or may not surprise you that we your parents are feeling the weight of them, too. Knowing that your time is limited in Iquique with our upcoming year of furlough leading into your senior year, we recognize that your goodbyes are that much more final. We can't yet imagine coming back to Chile without you! At the same time, we have watched you grow these past couple of years into an independent young man with goals and ideas that we look forward to seeing you explore as God enables and leads. We truly believe you've been given gifts of personality and the ability to connect with people for an eternal purpose by your Creator.
On your birthday, Aunt Terri again shared her gift of hospitality by baking your favorite chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. I didn't get the greatest picture but the candles and your smile are bright! We love you, Owen, and thank God for the privilege of being your parents. Happy 17th Birthday!
Love always,
Mom
