In the darkness of pre-dawn, I drove two hours on nearly deserted highways and kept awake thanks to Adventures in Odyssey and the anticipation of seeing this girl. Through the night and ten hours of riding shotgun while alternately crocheting and sleeping, she made her way from Iowa to Michigan and to me. Due to different time zones and glitches in communication, I awkwardly entered a diner full of men in flannels exchanging hunting stories over coffee to expectantly await her arrival.
It took another hour and a half, but the wait was well worth it.
Now I look at this picture and remember the chill of the morning, the light layer of snow on the ground, the joy of reunion, the smiles on our faces. And it was only the beginning of the gift of time we were given to be together. Sissy, too, took the long drive from Virginia to Michigan - her second such trip in just a few weeks - and it was pure joy to have my "Sweet Six" children in one place at last.
Oh, how we cherished you then and cherish you still! I am so thankful for this time together with our girls.
