It has been an interesting Christmas season so far.
The first of the school festivities took place last Friday, when Owen's pre-school held their annual Christmas party. Each of the kids was asked to come dressed as a miniature Santa or Mrs. Claus (of course I think the Santa I escorted to the party was just the cutest ever!)
Throughout the school year, each class had collected dues which were spent with gusto in preparation for the party. Frankly, we were alternately astonished and aghast at the fuss and how much was spent; ironically, somewhere along the way I was nominated as class treasurer and the spending fell to me! I was told to purchase a $20 gift for each child and to spend all the rest of the money on food. Part of the class' money also went towards a "show" for the children.

And what a show it was! Owen was so excited at first - and that excitement went through the roof with the arrival of "Spiderman" and "Ben 10" - but the program was so long and eventually he gave up the festivities in favor of the food. At the very end, "Santa" arrived and handed out the presents to the kids. I told another mom I didn't quite appreciate Santa getting the credit for the gifts I bought! :) But at least the choice of presents went over well (Ben 10 wristwatch walkie talkies for the boys and Littlest Pet Shop toys for the girls.)
sorry Barney, you are no one's favorite in this family!
In the end, it was another new experience to add to the many from this past year. Obviously, Christmas songs about baby Jesus being sung by Barney, Spiderman, Gummy Bear, and Hannah Montana (to name just a few) are not exactly our cup of tea but we were glad for the chance to interact with other parents. One mom from Owen's class has a daughter about Eva's age and lives just behind our house. She would like the girls to get together and play this summer, so that is a great new contact!
Next year, Owen will be starting kindergarten in the same school with the same teacher, so at least we will go into the year with a little better understanding of how it all works and hopefully with the opportunity to build upon relationships begun this year. We are proud of Owen for doing such a great job in a new environment these past ten months!
