Slice of Life: Late Nights in Iquique

Last night we enjoyed having a family from church over for dinner and a planning meeting for our couples' activities this year. On the menu was Chilean tomato & onion salad, Chilean potato & mayo salad, and Chilean corn salad with cilantro as well as sausages and beef on the grill. For the most part it was similar to a cookout we might do in the States with friends, with just one slight difference.

Dinner didn't start until after 9 p.m. and our guests stayed until after 1 a.m.! This is totally normal and cultural here in Iquique. Fortunately, we were well aware of this fact and knew what to expect. Our kids, however, passed out after their long week - one on the couch, one curled in the computer chair, and one who recognized his weakness and headed to bed on his own!

It certainly is helpful to be a "night owl" when living in this city. My only complaint is that while everyone stays up so late, the grocery stores close too early. Where's the 24-hour Walmart when you need one?? :)
