Shortly before noon, I headed to the emergency room with Owen. Here is the (somewhat) shortened version of today's events ...
His breathing had been labored and shallow all morning, along with a racing heartbeat. Soon after checking him in, the nurses put him on a monitor to check his oxygen levels, which were low. They gave Owen a nebulizer treatment and then sent him for chest x-rays. Returning from x-ray, the monitor again showed low oxygen levels and another nebulizer treatment was given. At this point, however, the doctor felt that hospitalization was necessary to give Owen oxygen and monitor his breathing.
Poor little guy suffered through a blood draw, IV insertion, and getting a tube stuck down his nose/throat twice for mucus samples. He kicked and screamed and cried, especially at the latter. Later, his IV plugged and the liquid started leaking all over the bed. Unfortunately the nurses had difficulty finding his veins (because they couldn't "see" them due to the color of his skin!) and he got pricked first in his hand, then when the needle couldn't go in all the way they pricked him near his inner elbow. He fought them so hard (all the while screaming "No quiere!" at the top of his lungs) that there ended up being blood all over the pillow and the nurse's hands!
Currently he is on oxygen and an IV, and will be spending the night in the hospital with Mommy. He is loving all the channels and cartoons on the TV! The doctors say he is demonstrating symptoms of asthma as opposed to a virus or illness such as pneumonia, although he is too young to diagnose as asthmatic just yet. The weather has turned cold at night and the air pollution has been really bad, so it's no surprise that the respiratory infections have started already. Please pray for a restful night and quick recuperation for Owen!

I'll pray for Owen but maybe even more so for his Mommy - before long he'll probably forget this day but Mommy never will!
Steph, this must not have posted right away, as I checked right before going to bed, and it wasn't there...I sure hope Owen is doing better this morning and they can get this figured out! Tell him that his cousin Benjamin feels his pain...he knows what it's like to have an IV placed and all that! Give him hugs from his PA family! Keep us posted! Love ya!
praying for both you and Owen. Hopefully, they can figure out what is wrong.
love,
cathy
