I wrote the poem below just after checking on my sleeping children and making sure they were tucked in for the night.
Then I sat down at the computer to look at an adoption blog I enjoy, only to read of the tragic (car accident) death of a 28-year old missionary wife and transracial adoptive mom named Amber Mathenia. (You can read a special tribute to Amber here and see a beautiful photo of Amber with her two children here.) Amber and her husband Anthony adopted their 4-year old daughter Ellie from Ethiopia (where they also served as missionaries) and their 6-month old son Isaac domestically.
Though I do not know the Mathenia family personally, reading of Amber’s unexpected death on the heels of my thoughts about not “missing today” was a reminder of making each day and each moment count for eternity – as a mom, as a wife, as a child of God and a bearer of His light to this dark world.
Please pray for the Mathenia family.
