Our Newest Musician

Eva had her first violin lesson yesterday!

Her teacher is Amanda, a young lady from one of the ABWE churches who studied music and plays both violin and piano. I was very impressed with her ability to teach and explain things on a level Eva could understand. For instance, when explaining the finger positions she drew a sad face on Eva’s left thumb and the numbers 1-3 on her other fingers (minus pinky.) She told Eva that the thumb is always punished in the corner and only the “eyes” peek over the top!

Eva is very thrilled to be taking violin lessons. She has already asked me if she can play with Aunt Nina in church someday! Her teacher said that being left-handed will actually prove to be an asset for her. At one point, she sang various notes for Eva and asked which one she preferred (higher or lower.) Eva consistently picked the high notes, which Amanda said was also good because the violin is higher-register instrument. (I just chuckled to myself remembering all the times Eva has tried to practice her “vibrato” for us – she definitely doesn’t mind high and LOUD notes!)

And finally, Amanda informed us that Eva was the only student who has played a “concert” for her during the first lesson … which is a nice way of saying that instead of playing each string four times, Eva tried to do her own thing! But, she had fun doing it and her teacher was a good sport. (:
