Is He Sudanese?

This was the question posed to me by a man passing by our table at the A & W restaurant on South Padre Island this past Wednesday.

He was a handsome black man accompanied by his lovely white wife and their two beautiful daughters, and his wife explained that her husband was from Ethiopia. I would have loved to know more about them, but after confirming the Owen was indeed Sudanese their curiosity was satisfied and they said their goodbyes.

It's not the first time we have been specifically asked if our son is Sudanese, but each time we have been surprised and pleased that a stranger would recognize that heritage in him.

I would love to know what it is in his features, exactly, that characterizes him as such. I know that when I see photos of Sudanese boys I can see Owen in them, but I cannot pinpoint the specific difference.

What I can say with certainty is that we are truly blessed with one handsome, charismatic little boy ... wouldn't you agree??
