We Will Never Forget

Do you remember this phrase that was often used in the days following September 11, 2001? The fifth anniversary of the tragedy that rocked our nation is approaching this Monday. I imagine that every one of us can clearly recall exactly where we were and what we were doing when the news began to break of the terrorist attack on American soil. The images of fire and destruction, fear and panic and loss of precious human life, will stay with me forever.

Yet if I am honest, can I admit that the impact of that day may have lessened as these five years have gone by? At least for those us who were not there, and who did not personally lose a loved one. Which is why I would encourage you on Monday, or even today as you read this blog, to consider visiting this site which is a legacy to those who died as a result of the events of 9/11.

I did, and what I saw was the face of a mother; the face of a daughter the age of my own; the face of a husband; the face of a grandfather ... and I read their stories and they became real to me. I cried for the children ... for the fear they must have experienced during those moments of uncertainty. I cried for the friends and family members who left notes of remembrance online and made each person so more than just a picture on an Internet page.

Perhaps in this way our hearts will be broken once again to pray for our nation, our President, our servicemen and women, and the families whose loved ones never returned home that fateful day. May God grant His peace and comfort and wisdom and may our nation which cried out to Him on that day truly admit our need for Him today and every day ...
