Fighting an Unseen Enemy

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."
 -Ephesians 6:12

It was only a few days after our return from furlough that I sat with them at their dining room table and listened.

I listened, and as I heard their worries and discouragement I told them, "We are in a battle. This is not the time to lower our arms! We must keep fighting."

I believed it then, and I believe it now.

Now that they have fallen away, victims to their fears and questions. Now that I have heard similar words from other lips. "I just don't feel like reading my Bible anymore. There have been so many changes. I think I need to take a break (fill in the blank - from church, from music ministry, etc.)"

We are in a spiritual war, and the enemy is pressing strong. He knows our people are confused by the changes. He knows their hearts are sad and questioning after the tragic loss. He knows now is the time to pelt them with disappointment, especially letdowns of the human variety to turn their focus laterally rather than upwards.

But now is not the time to stop fighting. Our enemy is defeated, whether he accepts it or not. We are victorious, whether we feel it or not. God has a purpose, whether we see it or not.

We must have faith. We must hold on - to Him Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We must reach out to one another in compassion and care, tending the wounded and encouraging the fainthearted. We must

"Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who have an anxious heart, "Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.”
-Isaiah 35:3-4

Why must we? Because He is coming soon. And because it is written

"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial,
for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life,
which God has promised to those who love him."
-James 1:12

Lord, We are your children. This is your church. Protect us and give us wisdom from above that only You can give. Help us to fulfill our roles well, for Your glory and the preservation of Your people. Fight for us, Lord. And give us strength to do battle as well. In Jesus' strong and precious name, Amen!
