World Cup Fever

World Cup Fever has struck throughout Chile and the Garcia household is not exempt. As you can see in the picture above, Owen celebrates his "La Roja" with much fervor. For Chile's first game, both of our children's schools televised the game for the students and encouraged them to dress in team gear. Our kids were more than willing to oblige! :)

There is nothing like the excitement of the World Cup in a Latin American country. It is the great uniting factor that crosses age, economic and racial barriers. Everyone gets on board in one way or another! Televisions appear in guard shacks, at the open air markets, in break rooms and stores and all channels are tuned in to this one event.

A national fast-food chain offered buy one, get one free meals if Chile won its first game. Blockbuster video stores offer a deduction of 100 pesos per goal made in the three games each day (Chilean or not.) In preparation for tomorrow's Chile vs. Switzerland game restaurants are promoting special menu items and according to tonight's newscast people are already planning when and where to watch and celebrate the game. Most businesses and schools are halting other activities for two breathless 45-minute halfs.

We along with the nation are excited to see what tomorrow holds. Our family's favorite player on Chile's team was the scorer in last week's game, Jean Beausejour of Haitian-Chilean descent. We have a vested interest in seeing him succeed! Already the youngest two Garcias have learned the national cheer: "CHI CHI CHI LE LE LE, VIVA CHILE!" We anticipate hearing it loud and clear in the morning. :)
