Children's Ministry: Día del Niño

In Chile, the second Sunday of August is celebrated as "Día del Niño" (Day of the Child.) Apparently the day has its origins in a 1956 UN declaration urging governments to recognize a special day each year for children, with the purpose of bringing awareness to the millions of working children worldwide. Unfortunately, from what I've observed the day does nothing to help the children who are already disadvantaged. Rather, toy stores peddle their wares; candy is handed out like it's going out of style; parents buy gifts for their children and once again consumerism is king.

It's not my favorite holiday for that very reason. Personally we don't celebrate the day in our home, but we do take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to the families whose kids participate in our children's ministries at church. This year our colleagues offered to open their home for the festivities and we had a great time introducing the kids to VeggieTales in Spanish; playing games out on the patio; and of course eating lots of sweets and goodies. As you can see from the pictures, the kids had a great time!

In Latin America, reaching the children is often key to reaching the parents. It is a joy to see children learn about God and especially to see their parents doing so as well Please pray that God will open doors to share His love and joy with the children and their families on these special days, and every day. Soon I will sharing more about a brand-new ministry our church has just begun to do just that. :)
