Iquique: Contrasts

Iquique is famous for its duty-free mall called "Zofri." In and around the mall you can find just about any kind of imported appliances, electronics, vehicles, etc. at a fraction of the cost anywhere else in the country. (With vehicles, the catch is that you are not allowed to purchase them and leave the city - you are only allowed to take the cars out of town a certain number of days a year for the first five years.) The Zofri is, of course, a very popular and busy place as you can see by the pictures below!

shiny floors and merchandise

convenient ATM's for easy shopping

In stark contrast to the Zofri with all of its attractions, a town of cardboard shacks and humble dwellings lies just around the corner. It was a reminder to me of the contrasts in this city and of its great needs, both spiritual and physical:

all types of material tacked together to form a home

one shack upon another

the humblest of dwellings
