Statistics of Abortion in Chile

44% : "Wanted" births

35% : Induced abortions

21% : "Unwanted" births

· A 2004 study states that Chile registers the highest number of abortions in Latin America.

· Although reported abortions in Chile are 40.000, the so-called "black number" of abortions climbs to 160.000, according to experts in the area of reproduction.

· Official statistics reflect only the number of women who are arrested for carrying out abortions, those who die after clandestine abortions and those who seek medial assistance after complications from an abortion.

· 40.000 women between 15 y 19 years old choose abortion.

· Approximately one in three pregnancies ends in abortion.

· Since the number of births each year is 270.000, this means that the number of abortions equals half of the children who are born.

· Death as a result of abortion is equal to one-third of all maternal deaths.
