Haiti has been called the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The needs in Haiti are tremendous. Living conditions are often indescribable. Over 200,000 children are orphaned and at least 10,000 live on the streets. Many of the children in Haiti have had one or both parents die. Many children will never see their 5th birthday because of the lack of nutrition in their daily diets.
Those children who die from a lack of protein suffer unimaginable pain. Licia, the nurse I quoted in yesterday’s post, wrote the following heartwrenching description of one child in their center. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I saw his pictures and read his story. The little boy died soon after she wrote this:
...the swelling has [gone] down in his hands.....but he is still next to deaths doors. He screams out in pain if you touch him......he calls everyone mama.....mama come and cover me up.......mama get me a drink of water......mama I need some meat.....mama my legs hurt......its so sad.....his mother died earlier this year giving birth to another child.
Recently, I have been following the blog of a couple adopting two children from a rescue center in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. The wife is currently visiting her kids, and she wrote that yesterday the rescue center received a new little boy. He is 2 ½ years old and only weighs 16 pounds. He is very ill. She wrote on her blog:
It is NOT right what goes on here. It is NOT right that kids live this way. It is NOT right that all they need is food. It is NOT right.
Pray for Haiti.
