Those are the responses so far to my adoption e-mails. Two agencies unable to work with us as missionaries overseas (for differing reasons) and one agency looking for a family for a particular placement … to the tune of $20-25,000.
I’ve come to the point in my adoption journey that I can almost understand $20-25,000 for an international adoption. After all, each country adds their own multiple-thousand dollar fees to what the agency charges. There are expensive airline tickets to purchase, and lodging to afford overseas. And I do understand that there are legitimate fees on the part of the U.S. agency, too. After all, even photocopies add up when you are putting together one of those thick dossiers!
(That said … understanding the fees and being able to pay them are two different things, of course!)
But what I really can’t wrap my mind around are those same fees being applied to domestic adoption situations in the United States. We have completed three adoptions – by God’s grace and provision – at less than half that cost. To me, it just feels wrong.
And tonight it also makes me feel very, very sad.

I am so very sorry! Ouch. Praying for peace and wisdom and trust in the One who holds your future.
I'd love to find an option that is cheaper, but not far short of $20,000 is what it seems to be right now. It does seem crazy. Although, I will say that alot of international adoptions aren't including the trip in that $20 - 25,000. That's the actual fee. Its crazy, I know that we would love to be able to adopt again, but things just keep getting more expensive. I'll continue to pray for you guys and what God has for you!!
