Remembering

My baby is under the weather tonight. He has been especially "needy" and wanting to be held and rocked (have I ever mentioned how thankful I am for the glider rocker that God gave me this summer?) Holding him against my chest and rocking him as he sleeps brings back so many memories of my first days with him in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit ...

Seeing him for the very first time and crying tears of joy for this child, our long-awaited miracle.

Feeling a glow of happiness when his nurse pointed out that he recognized our voices (Pedro's and mine) on just the second day.

Making sure his cheek touched the skin above my heart so he could feel my warmth and learn his Mommy's smell.

Falling asleep in the hospital recliner with his swaddled little body on my chest.

Holding the tiny syringe filled with formula high in the air so that it would flow through the tube in his nose down into his little belly to help him grow.

Carefully maneuvering around wires and observing the monitor lest I set off any unnecessary alarms.

Giving him his nightly bath and seeing his scrawny little arms and legs flail before we swaddled him back into comfort.

Earning the respect of his multiple nurses so that I could be his primary caregiver inside the hospital.

Being walked to our little rental car by the nurse, Owen bundled into his car seat and riding in the NICU's little red wagon, on the day of his discharge.

Thank you, Lord, for the three precious lives you have entrusted to our care ... And tonight, please give Owen your healing touch and a good night's rest ...

Our Isabella was a tiny little thing as well. Most of the things that you mentioned, brought so many memories back to me about our experience with her in the NICU. She was 4 pounds and 6 ounces when we first saw her (4 days old) and had to be in the hospital for a week after we got there.... boy I could post so many things that I remember from that time. There was something so sweet about it all. Thanks for sharing!
